i asked a question earlier today on one of the tattoo forums and i got one answer that got me thinking
my question was about the final decision when it comes to getting something tattooed . im not sure what i want i mean i know what i want but its hard for me ot make the final step
i was thinking about getting 3 hollow stars across my forearm or my zodiac sign which is Taurus

and this one person said that stars, kanji, zodiac signs are all tattoo cliches

but aren’t all , most popular designs a bit cliche ?? i mean we see people around with flowers and butterflies and fairy’s and tribal and dragon , skulls , wings swallows ,anchors etc…. you name it , people have it

i guess what im trying to say is , aren’t all designs the same ?? i mean the only thing that can someone make it more personal is it its maybe design by the person that want it to be tattooed on him or her
and i dont 100% believe that tattoos have to tell story behind them i think that its cause of the shows like LA or Miami ink people started to think that if it does not have any meaning its worthless
with the name i dont get it either
my friend actually got his last name tattooed on his ribs and i told him that it was kinda stupid ( i dont like to sugar coat things) i mean what is the point on getting your name on your body ??

I have a cliched butterfly on my shoulder and my husband’s name in Japanese across my lower back. The butterfly I got because it was pretty (although I only marginally like it now) and the name because it was a wedding present.

But mostly, yeah, all tattoos are total cliches unless they are extremely custom designed. The fun is seeing how people justify their "It’s meaningful to me" tattoos.

BTW, what is up with young guys tattooing their last names on themselves? Are they going to forget who they are?

I’ve totally fallen in love with this design. I would probably get the fairy dust to be pink though.

What are your thoughts?
This would be my first tattoo so I don’t want a huge one or one that’s gonna hurt like hell. Just a pretty little one!

It’s cute, and if that’s what you’ve fallen in love with go for it! I would personally change it up a little bit, just so it’s not exactly the same.

Like nautical stars, or a heart with a banner around it. Maybe a flaming skull with 8balls for eyes…

Or something common like a butterfly, or tribal tattoos (without having tribal affiliation) or a cross or a fairy…

I’m getting an anchor tattoo partially because it goes with the rest of the design, but I really wanted to make sure that it got included just for the fact that it is so ‘cliche’ LoL

Why did you get your tattoo? Because it looked best off the wall to choose designs from? Or becuase it means something or what?

Just curious (^_^)

I have a key on my wrist mostly cuz it looks cool haha. But I’ve always liked key designs, especially old antique ones.

I want to get a small tinkerbell on my left shoulder blade would it look tacky? I plan on getting her like when she’s using her wand with a traditional 8point peter pan star in one colour and some ‘fairy dust’ design coming from it. I’m thinking between 2 fingers by 2 fingers or 3 fingers by 3 fingers at the very most for size would this be too big? It would be easy enough to cover if necessary and has alot of meaning to me.
Please no don’t get a tattoo I already have one and nothing you say will change my opinion of them.
I know I want this tattoo I was asking an opinion on how I want to design it the size and place. If it’d look better somewhere else I’d get it there in example. And I did mean with clothes not as in a cover up tattoo. I’ve wanted this tattoo for 4 years now I wouldn’t get a carttoon without hard thinking ahead of time.

When I was about 19 (I’m 27 now) I got a very similar Tinkerbelle tattoo spanning my from mid spine down to my lower back(about 2 or 3 inches above my bottom). Mine is all black & grey. For me it was a statement of believing in things you can not see & to always remain young at heart. (I’m sorry I do not have any photos.) A few years later, I added the Italian phrase "Vita Bella" underneath which means "Life is beautiful". You have no idea how much I regret that tattoo & I can not wait until the day when I can have it removed.(It is much too large to cover up with anything I want tattooed on me in the future) While it is well done, it just doesn’t suit the person I have become anymore. You run that risk with any tattoo, so I am glad that you have made the choice to go very small & to have it put in an inconspicuous place. Another reason I dislike my tattoo now is that at the time fairies weren’t yet as insanely popular as they are now. But shortly after I got my tattoo, Britney Spears coincidentally got a smaller fairy on her lower back & next thing you know every teeny bopper out there had one. Then of course, about a year or two ago, Lindsay Lohan got "Vita Bella" branded on her & viola…I look like a walking advertisement for young troubled starlets.
My advice to you is to think long & hard about this which it sounds like you have. Again I think you have been very smart in your size & placement choices & I see nothing tacky about it at all. As long as it means something to you, then that is all that matters. But remember in a few years you may not be as fond of the idea as you are now, so I commend you on taking that into account as far as your statement of cover-ups.
Good luck & enjoy your new ink!

I was original going for the a small butterfly tattoo, but then I came across this which is a lot bigger and more detail design. The significance of the tattoo is closer from the death of my mom who I never really knew. She died when I was only four months old from a drug overdose. I wrote a poem the other day on butterflies in memory of my mom. The poem was relating to how people are like butterflies, that life is our temporary home, and heaven is home. The butterfly tattoo symbols rebirth and transformation, which is I feel my mom earned her wings when she passed away. As silly as it sounds, it’s something I’m passionate about. Her favorite color was purple and she even had a butterfly tattoo on her foot.
Here is the link to the design I found: http://www.purplemoon.com/Stickers/fairy-butterflies-purple.jpg
I just think she is worth the pain of a tattoo, and this design I found really relates to my poem.
I don’t know, any advice?

if its that important to you, then you should do it but you still have to think about how its going to affect your over all. is the money used on the tatoo needed for something more dire? are you sure you’ll want a permenant banner on your body forever – you could get it removed but thats crazy money. is your family ok with because you dont want to do somethign for your mom and cause a rift with another family member. its very nice to write a poem about your mother but getting a tatoo is serious. the pic is beatiful if you have enough money, your family is ok with it and your sure you could live with it then go ahed. but also think about where it will be and how big, its beatiful but make it too big and you got something big and annoying to look at and and put it on the wrong body part and it could come off as slezy and trashy. w/e your choice take some time you sound like a 17 or 18yr old so you got time to think, its not like your going to die if you dont have it in 1 minute

so, i got a tattoo a few weeks ago and im so ready to get a new one (once i have money) lol. i designed my first one and its this cute little star pattern on my stomach…but like the lower right. so this new i was thinking of putting it on the upper left side of my stomach or something, like right above and to the left of the navel. but then i actually drew it and its different from what i expected, like bigger. its a fairy and she got one leg kicked up and really awesome wings and then a little xXx on one side for straightedge. yeah, any other ideas of where i should get it. its just that i only have one and i dont know where would hurt? like stomach, back? idk. help please!!!

NOT on your stomach— someone else said it… once your’e pregnant, that will be a shooting star or a stretched out blob… and it wont come back to normal shape. Your fairy will look like a troll once it stretches out. Plus you may be cute & in shape now… 20 years from now when you gain 20 or 30 pounds, not so cute with a saggy fairy on your gut.

I have 2 tattoos, (well, I HAD 2 tattoos…)
One is on my lower back, unseen by anyone but my husband… the other one was on my ankle.
the ankle tattoo I got almost 15 yrs ago before it was "cool" to get them… it was only $35, and I spend probably close to $2000 getting it lasered off…. it took 2 years of blisters, pain, scabs, etc. but now it’s gone.
It wasn’t ugly (it was a blue dolphin) but it didn’t look professional & I was just really over it….
Lucky I had a good job & could pay to get rid of the thing.

seriously think about it, you may think it was the dumbest thing you ever did 5 or 10 years from now & wont want to go in a bikini or a tank top with a stretched out star & fairy on your tummy…
