i know im not the only one that thinks that black tribal on arms and **** is just way too common, and call me hypocrite, but iv found one that i recon isnt so mainstream. im gunna get it drawn up and altered by an art student mate and take it in to get stenciled, but wanted to know your thoughts about THIS design. the link is here, named ‘BLUE AURA TRIBAL’.

http://www.tattoofinder.com/find_tattooDB.asp

ahh, sorry about the link. cant find another one. the question was that i was asking if the design in question was less mainstream than other tribal designs. however seeing as it cannot be viewed, unless the picture is found, disreguard this question. cheers
yeah, if anyone can really be ****ed, tattoofinder.com, advanced search, ‘BLUE AURA TRIBAL’ by the artist ‘INKEE’.
dont blame you if you cant be buggered, i couldnt
cheers

Your link does not work.

Other than not being able to see your design, my response would be do what you want to do. It’s your tat, your arm.

My design has barbed wire and tribal. I’ve been told by many tat fans that barbed wire is for prison inmates. I’m seeing it as the crown of thorns. And it is my tat and my ankle so :p

So far I’ve tried Tribal Tattoo, Art n Soul and I can’t seem to get anyone to return my calls (?!). I need to get one done in the next five days as I’m moving out of the country.

Self Expressions in San Diego. They’re all good. But I’d recommend R.J.

Hi, i’m new to being a member, but yahoo answers have helped me a lot in the past.
i’m researching tattoos at the moment and have reached a stand still with my findings, im just seeing the same sites over and over.

i’m looking for something ‘tribal’ but more of a graphic design tribal rather than traditional tribal.
i can’t seem to find any tribal symbols that represent ‘courage’ and ’spirit’ (by spirit i mean spirit’s looking over you type meaning)

hope someone out there can help

cheers

I am Native American, and since you said your are not wanting to go traditional than you can just make up your own design. Don’t know why you would do that if you are wanting a tribal symbol??? In Indian history, many of there symbols and meanings were represented by animals and nature. In my tribe and in many others, the wolf symbolizes, courage and knowledge. The eagle symbolizes, spirit, freedom. However you can create one of your own, symbols represent what the person thinks or feels, in your case courage and spirit, think of an animal that when you see it makes you think that such as a wolf with a band around it. example: I have a tattoo on my rib cage (hurt a lot very big) it is a bear, that also has the face of an Indian, and sits shadowing a large mountain with a sunset. It symbolizes my heritage, the strength to conquer and overcome large obstacles in my life and to live another day in beauty with nature and oneself. I also have the wolf (courage) all I can say is make it your own if you really want it to represent you.

The word “tattoo” is a borrowing of the Samoan word tatau, meaning to mark or strike twice (the latter referring to traditional methods of applying the designs). The first syllable “ta”, meaning “hand”, is repeated twice as an onomatopoeic reference to the repetitive nature of the action, and the final syllable “U” translates to “color”.[citation needed] The instrument used to pierce the skin in Polynesian tattooing is called a hahau, the syllable “ha” meaning to “strike or pierce”.[citation needed] Still others attribute the modern word to the phrase used by The Polynesians. The word “tatao”, which means “to tap” (whice goes along with the method they used of tapping the skin with the long metal instrument they used with a finely sharpened end. The OED gives the etymology of tattoo as “In 18th c. tattaow, tattow. From Polynesian (Tahitian, Samoan, Tongan, etc.) tatau. In Marquesan, tatu.” The first closest known usage of the word in English was recorded in the diary of Captain James Cook in 1769 during his voyage to the Marquesas Islands. The text reads, “…they print signs on people’s body and call this tattaw”, referring to the Polynesian customs.[citation needed] Sailors on the voyage later introduced both the word and reintroduced the concept of tattooing to Europe.[1]] In Japanese the most common word used for traditional designs is, “Horimono”. The traditional Japanese hand method is called, “Tebori”. The word, “Irezumi,” simply means, “insertion of ink,” and could mean tattoos using Tebori, or Western style machine, (Or for that matter, any method of tattoing using insertion of ink). Japanese may use the word, “Tattoo,” to mean non-Japanese styles. Tattoo enthusiasts may refer to tattoos as, “Tats,” “Ink,” “Art,” or, “Work,” and to tattooists as, “Artists”. The latter usage is gaining greater support, with mainstream art galleries holding exhibitions of both traditional and custom tattoo designs. Copyrighted tattoo designs that are mass-produced and sold to tattoo artists are known as flash, a notable instance of industrial design. Flash sheets are prominently displayed in many tattoo parlors for the purpose of providing both inspiration and ready-made tattoo images to customers

I am doing a project about cultural diversity. The goal is to explain cultural diversity by using photographs that I have personally taken. I would like to use photos of body art as one aspect.

I live in a mid size town and am willing to drive 3 hours to a larger city to get the photographs I need. Part of this is for another aspect of the project. I plan on visiting a few tattoo shops tomorrow, but I am not sure what to ask for.

My question is what type of tattoos should I get pictures of?

I was thinking tribal, religious, and maybe even henna tattoos.

Any other ideas?

every tattoo has a story behind it, don’t limit yourself to any specifc ones. Also, tattoos are not the only types of body art out there. Just stay open to all possibilities

thanks for your help.

It will depend on the artist. Some are very fast and some work slow. I have both in my studio. Also there is prep time, etc. Depending on how much it hurts, they may go slow for you to take breaks, etc., since ankle work hurts. Expect an hour, especially if you are switching out colors.
