It really depends on a lot of factors. How large is the tattoo? Will it be all color? Or just one color? Location? Your personal pain tolerance? Here's my personal experience: I have a relative large tattoo (1/4 sleeve), all color, and it took about 3 hours in one sitting. Did it hurt? HELL YES. But it's very detailed and several colors, shading, etc... Any tattoo will hurt. No question about it.
References :
Any where is going to hurt. Where you are describing doesn't hurt that bad. The arm is actually the best and least painful for a tattoo. I have two. I have a low pain tolerance and I got one on my arm and that didn't hurt. Trust me, you are going to be saying it's not that bad. My other tattoo is on my lower back and it hurt a little.
References :
My tat is on my shoulder blade so I don't know how the arm will feel. For me it felt like a hundred shots at once but then my body became numb to it and I didn't feel the pain anymore. You'll do fine.
References :
I got my first tattoo 2 years ago. I was scared to death because everyone said it was going to hurt. Suprisingly it didn't hurt that much. To me it felt like someone was scratching me over and over again in the same place. My tattoo is at the nape of my neck and it's about 4inX4in. I can't wait to get another so you should be fine. The worse thing about the experience is the wound care afterwards.
References :
Even though I'm not a guy I sure do know tattoos.

From what I've heard the inside of the arm is more tender then the outside of the arm. Getting a shot is not like getting a tattoo. You're skin is being dug into by a stabbing needle and upon impact the surrounding area gets warm but then the good old endorphins kick in and if you concentrate on something else and relax your breathing you will be ok. The anticipation is the worst but once you're in the midst of things you'll realize how addicting it is and you'll be back for another soon after you get your first.
References :
It's not like getting a shot simply because it lasts a lot longer. A lot of people liken it to a cat scratch, which probably isn't too far from the truth, except it's not equal to the pain of one cat scratch - imagine that pain constantly for however long your tattoo takes. It's not pleasant but it's durable. And it does entirely depend on the area of the body, as well as your pain tolerance. I have a VERY low pain tolerance - but I found my upper arm area fine. It's one of the least painful areas. It begins to smart a bit when it gets closer to your armpit or elbow, or crosses over to the inner arm - but even then, it's nowhere near as painful as some other areas of your body. Believe me - if I can do it, you can!
References :
its worse than getting a shot, they drag a needle in your skin...yes it hurts but it's worth it, it depends on your pain tollerance.
