I’m not entirely sure of the difference!!
Thanks

Old school American Traditional tattoos uses 1/3 Black shading 1/3 of another basic color usually red, blue, or green and 1/3 skin tones.
Google Sailor Jerry or Ed Hardy for example.
New school tattoos are all the tattoos you see with crazy vibrant bright color and soft outlines.
Google Russ Abbott, Josh Woods, Joe Capobianco, Mike Devries.
I perfer new school tattoos just because I think they show more of artist capability and talent but like any tattoo enthusiast traditional is the heart that all of this came from and I have a lot of respect for sick ass traditional tattoos.

It’s the style of the artwork. The ‘new school’ stuff looks kinda like a five year old was foolin’ around on your arm. But it sells. Go figure. Look at Flash magazine for examples. The links below are not accurate. No offense, Miss Jennifer.

I always thought of the bright bold blocky tattoos as Old School and the new more daring more flowing tattoos as New School.

Old School = Old Stock. The real blood and guts of our once loved Society… New School = the shower of wasters that are around today, most could not lace the boots of the Old School/Stock!!

I’m not sure what everyone else calls them either. To me, both Jennifer’s links represent older style work. That Sailor tat has been popular for generations, and the other one has the clear colors and flowing lines of years past.
The new stuff I see today tends to be heavy dark stuff, so-called tribal designs. And there’s that pin-stripe looking stuff on the girl’s lower backs.
Many of the small designs, butterflies, etc. fit kinda in the middle.
They have been around a while, not old old, not new.
